I earned my PhD from Bowling Green State University in 2007 and completed my predoctoral internship at the West Los Angeles VA Healthcare System, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the VA Puget Sound Healthcare System’s Center of Excellence in Substance Addiction Treatment and Education (CESATE) in Seattle. I later transitioned to county‑level work, developing and overseeing programs that support individuals with mental health and substance use needs who come into contact with the criminal legal system. My work centers on expanding access to behavioral health services, strengthening community‑based supports, and improving pathways to stability and recovery for individuals navigating complex systems.

Across these roles, I’ve built a clinical perspective rooted in trauma‑informed care and developed a deep appreciation for our ability to thrive when we have access to care that supports healing, growth, and moving through major life challenges with strength and steadiness.

Outside the therapy room, I am a proud mom who finds joy in hiking, gardening, and spending time with family. I love getting lost in a great book or film. These passions keep me grounded and remind me daily of the importance of balance and a full life beyond our struggles.

Our lives and our brains throw us lots of curveballs, which can leave us feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. I specialize in working with people who find themselves “stuck on repeat” with compulsive behaviors. Using research-based techniques tailored to each unique person, I help people get back in the driver’s seat and navigate their lives according to their values and goals.

Using therapeutic interventions grounded in research and tailored to the individual, I have successfully treated anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, hoarding, body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) including skin picking and hair pulling, self-injury, tic disorders, compulsive technology use, substance use, and disordered eating in teens and adults. I have worked with special populations including members of the uniformed services, veterans, incarcerated people, and people with current and past cancer diagnoses. Dr. Brinkley received her Doctor of Psychology Degree (PsyD) from Spalding University, School of Professional Psychology in Louisivlle, KY. She completed her APA approved internship at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland and completed her two-year APA approved fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychology at Tripler Army Medical Center. Dr. Brinkley served 10 years as as an active duty Air Force clinical psychologist, primarily serving overseas in Europe and in the Pacific. She has experience working across all services, to include Air Force, Space Force, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. She has also worked with refugees and foreign military and has extensive experience in Community Disaster Mental Health Responses.

Dr. Brinkley has experience consulting with military leaders regarding mental health and psychological well-being of their respective units, to include suicide prevention, substance abuse, and sleep related issues. She has led multiple programs, serving in roles ranging from supervisor to Regional Director. Examples of programs she has led include, mental health clinics, substance abuse programs, and child based federal programs, such as Educational and Developmental Intervention Services serving children ages 0-18. Dr. Brinkley conducts evaluations across the life-span, including developmental, autism-spectrum, learning disability, selection and assessment for special occupational duties, and general clinical evaluations. She has experience teaching as the university level as well as supervising graduate students in clinical work.

I earned my doctorate in psychology from the University of Houston and am a multilingual provider fluent in English, Urdu, and Hindi. My training and research background includes work in social processes, cognitive psychology, sleep-deprivation, and adolescent-focused laboratories, which informs my evidence-based and developmentally informed approach to care.

I am currently a professor, and I previously served as the Training Director for the Mindfulness, Well-Being, and Spirituality Lab at the University of Houston. My research centers on positive psychology, the Dual-Factor Model of mental health, and culturally responsive treatment approaches. I have had the good fortune of working with people from numerous backgrounds and all different ages. While I use psychodynamic theory to help us understand how your mind and emotions work, I also employ interventions using the following modalities: behavioral principles, mindfulness-based interventions, polyvagal-informed interventions, and existential thought. I use behavioral principles to help clients act and to identify aspects of the environment that promote or inhibit both helpful and unhelpful behaviors. Mindfulness-based interventions are used to enhance the ability to accept ourselves, encourage self-compassion, to identify how we respond to our environment, develop a more adaptive interaction with ourselves and our world, and to use stress-reducing strategies. Polyvagal-informed therapy helps clients to identify how the autonomic nervous system “remembers” our lived experience and informs us of safety or danger in the environment. This approach helps clients learn to manage their body’s response to stress in various forms. Finally, I use existential principles in the treatment of anxiety in all its forms. Existential forms of therapy help clients face life with courage, recognizing that they can survive what may come.
