Dr. Sofie Shouse is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years of experience providing compassionate, evidence-based care to teens (15+) and adults navigating a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and relational concerns. She works with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, mood fluctuations, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, perfectionism, emotional dysregulation, relationship challenges, low self-esteem, and difficulties with identity, life transitions, or coping skills. Dr. Shouse also supports individuals struggling with body image concerns, disordered eating patterns, and their relationship with food, while taking a Health At Every Size®-aligned approach.
Dr. Shouse draws from evidence-based therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). While she values evidence-based treatment, her primary focus is building a strong therapeutic relationship grounded in trust, honesty, empathy, and genuine connection. She believes therapy is fundamentally about helping people better understand themselves, process difficult emotions, and move toward meaningful and lasting change.
Her approach begins with a thoughtful assessment process to better understand each client’s unique experiences, strengths, and goals. She tailors therapy to the individual, helping clients identify and shift unhelpful thoughts, beliefs, and behavioral patterns while building healthier coping strategies and greater self-compassion. Dr. Shouse believes therapy is not about perfection, but about making progress and creating a more fulfilling and authentic life.
Dr. Shouse is affirming of individuals who practice polyamory and/or identify as LGBTQIA+, and she is knowledgeable about neurodivergence, including ADHD and giftedness. In addition to supporting teens and adults, she also works with parents of gifted and neurodivergent children, helping families better understand emotional intensity, behavioral challenges, perfectionism, executive functioning difficulties, and parenting strategies that support their child’s growth and well-being.
Dr. Shouse earned her Master of Arts (2008) and Doctor of Psychology (2011) in Clinical Psychology from Xavier University. Her clinical training focused on child and adolescent psychology as well as the psychology of individuals with severe mental illness. She completed her pre-doctoral internship at Ohio University Counseling and Psychological Services and her post-doctoral fellowship with University of Cincinnati Health Services and Associates in Behavioral Consultation. Throughout her training and career, she has completed specialized professional development opportunities related to eating disorders, college mental health, and evidence-based psychotherapy.
For the past ten years, Dr. Shouse has worked in group private practice providing therapy to teenagers and adults with a broad range of mental health concerns.
In her free time, she enjoys cooking, hosting friends, exploring nature, and planning family adventures. She also keeps busy with her three children (two with ADHD) and large poodle at home.
