Who We Are

We are committed to helping train tomorrow’s psychologists. We believe that through continuous learning and application of research-based approaches to clinical settings, we can best help those we serve. We are about a high quality, ethical, and rewarding experience for everyone. Training is a protected part of our mission that is not driven by productivity or financial models but rather one of “doing good.” As such, we are selective about who we will take on into this psychology practice and provide supervision to ensure the best learning and care possible. We have found that many of our fellows then go on to join us as colleagues.  Indeed, we have pathways to support fellows who wish to stay on as employees, contractors, or open their own Nowlogy clinic of their own.

The group practice environment affords a number of benefits. As compared with private practice, group practices offer the ability to network with peers and colleagues. The group practice environment offers services like billing and administrative support, and built-in referrals. It is also typically more robust to financial pressures. When compared with large institutional settings (e.g., hospital systems), group practices may offer more flexibility, such as with scheduling and patient preferences.

Who You Are

We pride ourselves on providing doctoral-level expertise; we welcome trainees with PsyDs and PhDs in mental healthcare fields including clinical, counseling, marriage and family therapy, and school psychology. We prefer applicants from a regionally-accredited program (including APA or PCSAS), although please feel free to inquire if you are from a non-accredited program and you wish to apply to one of our Minnesota offices. As noted above, we may be particularly attractive to trainees who wish to gain experience in a group practice setting.

We typically support approximately five post-doctoral fellows at a time, although have capacity for more. Fellowships are available at any of our Minnesota locations. We currently have openings in our Texas locations as well (one of our most competitive sites). Having several fellows in a cohort means that you have the opportunity to build relationships with peers at this stage of training.  For instance, many of our fellows find it helpful to consult on topics such as EPPP preparation or the licensure process.

Training Opportunities

Direct patient contact:

Nowlogy™ offers opportunities in assessment, therapy, and consultation. Opportunities are tailored to the trainee to ensure they gain the experience they hope to have toward independent licensure. In fact, we offer a variety of tracks such that trainees are able to specialize in the populations with whom they want to work. Our tracks include: Clinical Generalist, OCD/Anxiety/Trauma Focus, LGBTQ+ Clientele Focus, and Child/Adolescent/Family Focus.

Clients are seen in person and online.  For the training year, fellows work on site but if they continue with employment, opportunities are available later on for them to work a hybrid model (in person and remote).

Supervision:

Post-doctoral fellows receive one hour of group supervision and one hour of individual supervision with a licensed psychologist each week. Additional supervision is also available as needed for certain needs (e.g., complex assessment consultation, forensic cases, etc.).  We ensure that you meet supervision requirements for licensure in the state you wish to reside after fellowship.

Didactics and trainings:

We regularly invite presentations, speakers, and consultants to work with our doctors and trainees. For instance, we have a consulting relationship with Dr. Raja David, a leading expert in therapeutic assessment. Dr. David provides trainings and monthly consultations to our fellows and doctors. Another recent example is Social Security Disability Consultative Exam training. Webinars and trainings are encouraged and recommended, and we ensure that fellows have enough time in their schedules to devote to professional development.  When fellows have completed their clinical activities, there is often time for them to also engage in preparation for the EPPP.

Supervisors

Dr. Erin Lawton is the Director of Training and serves as the group supervisor, as well as the primary clinical supervisor for adult-focused trainees at most sites. Dr. Ruhee L. Sutar serves as the primary supervisor for psychological assessment cases across the lifespan and supervises child, adolescent, and family treatment and assessment cases. Dr. Emily Sander serves as the primary clinical supervisor for fellows at the Northfield clinic. Dr. Kaitlyn Van Pay serves as the primary clinical supervisor for fellows at the Hastings clinic. Other supervisors are available, depending on specialization. And as noted above, consultation is available with Dr. Raja David and Dr. Ken Abrams.

Dr. Erin Lawton supervises adolescent and adult therapy.  She tailors the therapy to the client and draws from cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance commitment therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, exposure response prevention, cognitive processing therapy, motivational interviewing, and person-centered therapy.

Dr. Emily Sander supervises therapy cases across the developmental spectrum, as well as family and couples’ therapy.  Additionally, Dr. Sander supervises assessment cases and psychological consultations.  Dr. Sander has expertise in evidence-based treatments including EMDR, internal family systems, ACT, CBT, and DBT therapies, but also strongly believes that treatment must be tailored to each client’s needs. Dr. Sander is particularly passionate about trauma-informed and neurodiversity affirming therapies.

Dr. Kate Van Pay supervises adolescent and adult therapy as well as psychological assessment cases. Dr. Van Pay believes that “no one size fits all” when it comes to therapy and helps each individual client learn what approach best fits them. Main therapeutic modalities utilized include Interpersonal Process, Client-Centered, ACT, and EMDR. Dr. Van Pay is a generalist and is particularly passionate about working with trauma recovery, core negative beliefs of self-worth, and anxiety.

Dr. Ruhee L. Sutar supervises child, adolescent, and young adult therapy cases, as well as psychological assessment cases across the lifespan, and provides group supervision in child, adolescent, and family treatment and assessment. Her supervision focuses on neurodevelopmental presentations, complex and overlapping diagnostic profiles, and the interplay of cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and medical factors. Dr. Sutar provides supervision in comprehensive assessment (e.g., ADHD, autism, learning differences, anxiety, mood, and related conditions) and therapy grounded in an eclectic, evidence-based framework that commonly integrates cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, exposure-based approaches, parent behavior training, and trauma-informed care. She emphasizes diagnostic clarity, strong case formulation, and translating clinical data into practical, meaningful recommendations for families, schools/workplaces, and interdisciplinary teams.

Dr. Amelia Paquin supervises child (ages 5+), adolescent, and adult assessments and therapy, family and couples therapy, and psychological consultations.  Therapeutic approaches are tailored to the client, but some common modalities include acceptance commitment therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, parent behavioral therapies, exposure response prevention, trauma-focused CBT, cognitive processing therapy, written exposure therapy, motivational interviewing, person-centered therapy, and therapeutic assessments.

Compensation and Benefits

We offer a competitive salary. In addition, we offer paid time off, as well as health, dental, and vision insurance.

Post-doctoral fellows are provided with offices, computers, and all the tools that they need to be successful and prepared to work in a group practice.
